2 Herons honored by Liberty League

GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League this week. The frontcourt tandem of senior Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) and first-year Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) was named the Liberty League Women’s Basketball Forward and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
The pair led the Herons to a 2-1 week with wins over Hartwick, 84-76, and Lincoln (Pa.), 70-49. William Smith suffered its lone loss of the week in double overtime to William Paterson 83-81.
Czajkowski averaged 15.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg, and 2.7 apg last week. At Hartwick on Tuesday, she narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Against Lincoln on Friday, Czajkowski again just missed a double-double, scoring a team-high 13 points and pulling down a team-high nine rebounds. In the championship game of the STARTERS Moravian Winter Classic vs. William Paterson, she scored 18 points and grabbed six boards. Czajkowski’s efforts earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team. For the week, she shot 47.6 percent from the floor.
Through the first 10 games of the season, Czajkowski leads the team in scoring (15.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg) and ranks in the top three in assists (2.0 apg), steals (2.0 spg), and blocked shots (0.2 bpg).
Cunningham averaged 15.0 points and 5.7 rebounds last week. Against the Hawks, she scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, while collecting six rebounds. Vs. the Lions, Cunningham notched 12 points and five boards. The following afternoon against the Pioneers, she scored a team-high 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting and grabbed six boards. Cunningham also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. She finished the week shooting 52.6 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
Cunningham is fourth on the team in scoring this season with a 9.7 per game average and is second in rebounding at 5.8 rpg. She is shooting 48.1 percent from the floor and a team-high 79.2 percent from the free throw line.
William Smith (6-4) is back in action on Jan. 12, when the Herons host St. Lawrence University in a rematch of last season’s Liberty League Championship game. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 6 p.m. Real-time statistics and streaming audio can be accessed through the Colleges' Web site.
